About Shel

Sheldon Allan Silverstein

1930-1999

Not much is known about Silverstein’s past, for he was a very private man and avoided public appearances his whole life.

Shel never planned to be a children’s poet. He started as a cartoonist and worked for Playboy for a while before turning to children’s poetry. Shel’s own illustrations accompany his writing, and are just as iconic as his words.
